Raging Panga!

July 28, 2012  Thirteen people were arrested early Thursday morning after U.S. Border Patrol and other authorities intercepted a Mexican panga-style boat carrying more than 6,600 pounds of marijuana along the Santa Barbara County coast.
About 1 a.m., border patrol agents observed the boat just off the shore of Las Flores Beach near Gaviota, according to the San Diego sector of U.S. Border Patrol.
Agents responded to the area and allegedly found the 27-foot boat with three outboard motors, which had come ashore.
A total of 300 bales of marijuana, totaling 6,620 pounds, were allegedly found on board, according to officials.  Read more:  COUNTY IN BRIEF

METACRITIC Breaking Bad: Season 5

The Bottom Line:  Fresh from his season four "victory" over Gus Fring, Walter White is now in charge. And he's loving it. Jesse is back, Mike is sort of back, wife Skyler's early fears may be masking what she really feels inside and series creator Vince Gilligan appears to have done it again. It's not a matter of wondering if Breaking Bad will be great, but where in the pantheon it will ultimately reside.  THE HOLLYWOOD REPORTER

Bad Girl: convict and escapee extraordinaire ~ 1786

“I was 17 from a fishin’ family, a family that was starving.  I was always a bit wild.  I should have listened to my father.  I should have listened to my mother.  But I didn’t.”
Mary Bryant, convict, was baptized on 1 May 1765 at Fowey, Cornwall, England, the daughter of a mariner named Broad, whose family was 'eminent for sheep stealing'. On 20 May 1786 at the Exeter Assizes she, referred to as Mary Braund, was charged with assault and robbery, convicted and sentenced to death. Her sentence was commuted to transportation for seven years, and she was taken from Exeter jail to the hulk Dunkirk off Plymouth, where she remained until transhipped to the transport Charlotte in the First Fleet for Botany Bay.

This original bad girl, Mary, turned her life around like no other.  In 2005 a miniseries from Oz, The Incredible Journey of Mary Bryant,  brought to life an amazing story as well the wit and endurance of one of histories most fascinating heroines and media sensations.

After a voyage of sixty-six days, Mary, her children and the eight men reached Kupang, in West Timor on the island of Timor, a journey of 5,000 kilometres (appx 3000 miles)   . This extraordinary voyage became part of seafaring history, and has often been compared with William Bligh's similar epic journey in an open boat of only two years earlier, after the mutiny on the Bounty. Bligh's voyage had also ended in Timor. The trip involved navigating the then uncharted Great Barrier Reef and the Torres Straits.

Season 1 Episode 1 Part 1
It's been a while since we've had a big miniseries focusing on Australia's colonial times and the remarkable story of Mary Bryant - convict and escapee extraordinaire - is perfect TV fodder. Another plus is having the stunning young English actress Romola Garai in the title role, and a support cast that includes Sam Neill and Garry McDonald.

June 20, 2011  The Federal Bureau of Investigation is looking to elderly women to help them locate one of the country’s most wanted criminals.  The agency announced yesterday that new pleas for information in its search for 81-year-old James “Whitey” Bulger will focus on his longtime girlfriend Catherine Greig.
Apprehended on June 22, 2011 - After 16 years on the run from law enforcement, Boston mob boss James "Whitey" Bulger, was arrested in Santa Monica with his longtime companion, Catherine Greig, 60, who fled Massachusetts with the gangster in late 1994.

Catherine Greig called ‘cold-hearted criminal’ by Timothy Connors, whose father was murdered 37 years ago today.  “You are as much a criminal as Whitey, and you ought to be handled as such,’’ Connors said to Greig at her sentencing hearing in US District Court. “You are a cold-hearted criminal.”
Catherine Greig was sentenced to eight years in prison, and was admonished by the judge for her loyalty and support of wanted mobster James 'Whitey' Bulger. Catherine Greig posed as Bulger's wife, picked up his medicine, and helped him while he evaded the FBI for 16 years.
